War Heroes: Erwin Rommel by Raephen War Heroes: Erwin Rommel by Raephen
Yes he is.

Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944) (also known as the "Desert Fox", Wüstenfuchs) was perhaps the most famous German Field Marshal of World War II. He was the commander of the Deutsches Afrikakorps and became known for the skillful military campaigns he waged on behalf of the German Army in North Africa. He was later in command of the German forces opposing the Allied cross-channel invasion at Normandy. He is thought by many to have been the most skilled commander of desert warfare in World War II.

Rommel's military successes earned the respect not only of his troops and Adolf Hitler, but also that of his enemy Commonwealth troops in the North African Campaign. An enduring legacy of Rommel's character is that he is also considered to be a chivalrous and humane military officer in contrast with many other figures of Nazi Germany. His famous Afrikakorps was not accused of any war crimes. Indeed, captured Commonwealth soldiers during his Africa campaign were reported to have been largely treated humanely. Furthermore, orders to kill captured Jewish soldiers and civilians out of hand in all theatres of his command were defiantly ignored. Following the defeat of Axis forces in North Africa, and while commanding the defense of Occupied France, his fortunes changed when he was suspected of involvement in the failed July 20 Plot of 1944 to kill Hitler and was forced to commit suicide.

While some may not see it that way, certainly see him as a hero. He was a soldier, thus fought for his country, but he knew what Nazi Germany was doing was wrong, and he let them know it.

He was a great and clever general, not involved in the nazi ideology, but he was just a soldier who fought for his Country.

I always admired this man, not as a Nazi of course, but as a commander.

Well that's great because he wasn't part of the party. He was non-political.

A nice alternation to all these Nazis who claim his name and persona for it´s own. Beside some others(oddly the most skillfull) commanders who never agreed with the NSDAP and Hitler, but thought they had to fight for ther land.
Thanx for it^^

thank you, that you put this note on DA. According to me it is very much needed, especially in spreading the truth just ^ ^. Heh, I can not express in words how much I appreciate the Desert Fox, and the memory of it. Thanks again for your effort to insert this note on DA.

In addition, the Weimar Republic is a staunch ally of Republican Spain, and a member of the Allies.

If you've got a copy of HOI3, I can send you the beta of the mod. It's still playable, but I haven't figured out how to add the events that are going to trigger the "alternate" World War II. :)

Brilliant tactician, and an all around amazing guy like you said. Definitely a hero.

It just bugs me how people look at the flag someone follows and then make judgments about them. Just as much as you can be an American and not follow America's stereotypical ideals, you can be a Nazi, and not follow their ideals entirely either.

You make a very good point, my friend ^^

That's what I admired most about this guy - he was humane and treated people with respect, unlike so many of the other officers of the Nazi army. I found that so cool that I named one of my characters after him XD

:D! Yeah I had to argue with my professor that he was a good guy regardless of the uniform and all he could say was "But he's a German" *face palm*

Totally. Rommel was indeed a good man. Just because he was a German in Nazi Germany doesn't mean he was a carbon copy of every other soldier out there >> That's another thing I admire about him, how he didn't let his peers' beliefs get in the way of his own beliefs.
